Finding work in central or northern Italy

Finding work in central or northern Italy?
I moved to Naples, Italy in Sept. of 2005. I have been teaching English at a school since then, but the school does not offer help in obtaining a work visa. The school year will be over in the beginning of June, and I am now searching for summer time work and also work for the fall. I would like to head to central or northern Italy as Naples has not been my cup of tea. Before moving to Italy, I worked for Intel Corporation for 10 years. I don't expect to be able to get a job with a major company, however, since I don't know the Italian language very well yet. (sigh) So, until then, I'm searching for any summer time work and probably teaching work in the fall. If you have any ideas, I would so appreciate your reply. Thanks!

hmm... I want the same job... I bet a number of people would. Wonder if you get a response... seems difficult.
2 :
Welcome to hell... I just moved from Italy. What you need is a Permisso Di Sogerno (not spelled right) but there you go. This allows you to live and work in Italy. Without it you're totally screwed unless you work a black market job which is what your english teaching job sounds like. Also, thoughout Italy there's not much of a drive for English lessons, especially in the north where the market is flooded. The permisso is the golden ticket. There are two ways to get one. A company applies for a work visa for you, or you get married. I married an Italian and lived near Torino and got a visa in time to work on the Winter Olympics. But it's difficult. My friend Nataly has been in Italy longer then I have on a touristic visa. You can apply for a student visa which I think has a limmitted work permission, but you have to leave the country and go to the U.S. to do it. If you want more help, e-mail me at lucky7tjw@yahoo.com We might be able to stir up something for you. At least some english tutoring contacts. :) Good luck!

i have heard that the italian gov. is in the process of legalizing all the ppl who are not already legal in italy. which means that they will give Permesso Di Soggiorno to all. hopefully this might help! good luck

Only if u r employed by some company in Italy, otherwise NO CHANCE.
2 :
Erm to be honest you can't you need an education to do anything
3 :
You can't. If you really want to move to Italy, go back to school and get a degree. Your best bet would be to study nursing as there is a nursing shortage throughout Europe and most countries have special visas for overseas nurses.
4 :
The Italian work permit scheme is administered regionally, so implementation differs significantly depending on the exact destination within Italy. Italian work permits must be sponsored by an Italian company. They cannot be applied for directly by a potential employee or by an agency. Processing times vary between regions, but the average is about two months

Does anyone know if a French to American outlet converter will work in Italy

Does anyone know if a French to American outlet converter will work in Italy?
I only have the french one.
Other - Italy - 3 Answers

1 :
Most of the outlet converters have several ones in the package, so just about wherever you travel, one witll work. The box will tell you what is inside for conversion from what to what, and of course the personnel at the travel store can advise you too
2 :
I'm guessing your converter will work in Italy. I have a little assortment I've collected over the years. They are inexpensive and available in your hotel. I confess; we short circuited the whole building in a little French town using the wrong converter. The crossiants were late for breakfast that morning in the little hotel, but we tried to look innocent, and it was an innocent boo boo. Just check one out with the front desk or air dry!!
3 :
Plugs that work in France will work in Italy. Thus if your question is will my American to French converter work in Italy the answer is yes. If your question is will my French to American converter work in Italy the answer is no as Italian outlets are not compatible with those found in the States.

You can use a t mobile card for Europe and get local calls over there. if you want to use O2 you probably need to unlock you phone.

skype should work, but then there are also calling cards (which you should carry at least one on you just in case.) and at the risk of sounding stupid: magicjack. i do not recommend you using your tracphone because even though it is a prepaid they can still charge you roaming fees and international calling fees.
2 :
A Tracfone will not work in Italy. Skype would be a good alternative. You can always pick up a prepaid cell phone while in Italy as well.

Do Visa gift cards work in Italy? Are they worth bringing over there

Do Visa gift cards work in Italy? Are they worth bringing over there?
My daughter is going in April - she has gift cards but I don't know if if will be worth her taking them with the exchange rate on them. Any suggestion?

I went to Italy two years ago. I found that having a credit card is much more convient. Every merchant will know what that is and there is no need for explanation. I would think that if someone did not understand it would be kind of hard to explain if you don't speak italian. But she will have the time of her life either way!
2 :
I went to Italy on my honeymoon two years ago and we used Visa cards from AAA for everything. I'm assuming you are talking about the type that you can add money too. It was very safe and they worked. It will take money out in Euros, so you have to factor that in when you decide how much money to load onto the card. Also, some restaurants and retailers charge a fee for using them. We used them as ATM cards and got cash for our needs and then used the cash to avoid the fee.
3 :
You can use a Visa gift card anywhere that accepts Visa. As for the exchange rate. I can't tell you that. You never know what that will be until much closer to the time you're going. The american dollar could take a dive, the euro could take a dive, who knows? But I would recommend bringing a visa or gift cards or something along those lines instead of a pocket full of cash. You can cancel a card if it's stolen and not be out any money, but if your cash disappears, you're just out of luck! Obviously, some cash is necessary, but I never depend on it exclusively when I travel, it's just not safe.

You need an unlocked quadband or better gsm sim card type phone. You buy an Italian prepaid sim and pop it in. It should work fine. American only dualband phones won't work as even if they are unlocked the two primary gsm frequencies in Italy/EU are not available in the US. US gsm frequencies are 850/1900. Italy/EU is 900/1800. I live in Los Angeles and I am looking to move to Italy to work and go to school- what do I need

I live in Los Angeles and I am looking to move to Italy to work and go to school- what do I need?
I have heard of a program that pays Americans to teach English in Italy and provides housing and pay, how does that work? How do i go about getting a dual citizenship?
Other - Italy - 8 Answers

1 :
To work in Italy you need a work permit, which must be applied for by your employer in Italy. AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN because Italy is part of the EU and they have to give priority to any citizen of the EU first. To study in Italy you must enroll in a university and obtain a student visa. This is relatively easy but requires a few months of logistics. To become a citizen of Italy, there are several ways. The best way is to prove that you are of Italian descent and satisfy all the criteria of citizenship "by blood". Other ways include: - by marriage to an Italian citizen (after 6 months in Italy or 3 years outside of Italy) - by naturalization (after several years as a permanent resident)
2 :
In order to go to school here you would need to to be accepted to a school here and have an education visa; this is the visa site for Italy: http://www.esteri.it/visti/home_eng.asp . The site has links to the application and information about the requirements and other supporting documentation you need to supply. A work visa is different. I am not aware of any program that pays Americans to teach English in Italy and provides housing. This may be something through a US university program if it exists - something like a semester or year abroad. However, it is illegal for you to work here without having a work visa (that's on the site above too). European regulations require that employers advertise jobs and demonstrate that there are no viable European candidates before they can get a work permit for someone else. Europeans have the right to live and work here. In the town where I live, there is a language school which hires young people on short term contracts to teach English. However, the teachers are always from the UK or Ireland because they can work here without all the overhead involved in hiring other foreigners. When I got my visa for Italy, the process took 8 months and that was just for a job that was transferred from the US to Italy that I had already been doing for several years. Be aware that as an American expat, you would need to file income tax returns both in Italy and te US if you were working here. Citizenship is another matter. That's a long process that takes years with some exceptions if you have direct Italian heritage.
3 :
you would need a psychologist :) I'm Italian and I would do "somersaults" to live in California!
4 :
Do ragione al tizio sopra di me, in tanti vorrebbero trasefirsi a Malibu'.
5 :
Ok, first of all, do you have any family members that have lived in Italy? Because my sister went through a citizenship process that took over a year... It is really annoying, but if that's where you dream of living, go for it... but it helps if you speak italian :)
6 :
hahahaha you live in L.A and you wanna go in italy???? hahahahahahah stay here...
7 :
You may have heard of the program that pays people to teach English but then, taken by the excitement, you must have forgotten to wonder HOW MUCH DO THEY PAY you to do that. I can grant is not much. (Sometimes below 1000 euros a month, with maximum peaks at 1300/1400 euros for really good teachers in really good schools) Also, as many others stated, due to a series of laws EU created, priority goes to EU citizens. All that said, provided you have the requirements to teach, you may apply to the various English School chains we have in Italy (although i am almost sure they are sourcing staff from UK and Ireland, with an US minority). Last but not least, Italy is undergoing a really bad economic crisis and there is a certain lack of jobs, which may make your life hard. That detail, combined with the high living costs caused by Euro and underpaid jobs without warranties, makes life really uneasy in Italy, which is not that Heaven it used to be BEFORE euro and EU begun to take over the country. If i were you, i'd look into Asian countries, where teaching if definitely better paid, flexible and life is bubbly and without worries. A plus is, IT IS FULL OF AMERICANS FED UP OF AMERICA AND THE LACK OF A WELFARE SYSTEM who come here to live, study, enjoy a more relaxing life and GET FREE HEALTH CARE. Cheers
8 :
To start with you would need such a vast amount of luck you'd probably drain the whole of California just to find a job. Trust me, come on holiday to italy, but think long and hard before coming over. It's seriously tough for natives, just think for someone who needs to get their grips with a new tax system, a new health system, a new language, new bundles of red tape, etc etc etc... as well as finding a job.

There's nothing legally stopping you but, creditors are pretty stringent these days. Being out of the country will probably be a hurdle. Do you need dollars? An Italian bank ought to be able to loan you Euros and make a spot trade in the forex market for dollars. You have the added risk of currency fluctuations then...

Not sure .I think there is a different wave length for reception so it may not work .Double check,I might be wrong . It's' like radio stations. They all have different frequencies. So the Indian cell phone (mobile phone) will probably have a different frequency from the Italian one. You may have to buy a new sim card kit which connects with an Italian mobile company. And get a new mobile number to tell anyone who is trying to contact you. Why don't you try skype internet phone. That uses the internet (high speed broadband ) to talk with people and is cheaper, but call quality can be a problem .

I am sure all you'd have to do is take a test and do residency in those countries.
2 :
You can work in any of the EU countries since you are an EU citizen. Even if you qualify in the UK as a doctor, doesn't make one bit of different where you study in the EU you be able to use that qualifications to work in any of the 27 EU countries.
3 :
After finishing basic medical training (university studies and, in some countries, internship) in a EU state or in Iceland, Norway, Lichtenstein or Switzerland you should be able to be licenced in any other of those states with only some paperwork and in some cases a fee. If your training complies with directive 2005/36/EC and you are in good standing you do not have to undergo any extra training or testing. If you move to another state before reaching the minimum level for this automatic recognition (corresponding to a full registration in the UK) the amount of extra training and/or testing needed varies between different states.

does xbox 360 games bought in ukraine work in italy

does xbox 360 games bought in ukraine work in italy?
I am going to Ukraine to visit family of my wife. I have heard the price for an xbox 360 game there is about 6 to 7 euros. Will it work on my italian Xbox 360 or will there be some limit of some kind preventing me to use it??

It should, but I really doubt you will find a very big selection to chose from. When I lived there I did not see many consoles or games for that, most games are PC based as it is hard to compete in that market with real non bootlegged games. The other issues that you could find is the games will most likely be in Russian. Good luck.

You'll have to add funds, then it will work. If it's an unlocked phone you can also get an french sim like orange or sfr. There is a sim called mobiho that you can buy in tabac shops for around 20 euro that does not require documents. Same with this relatively new bic phone you can buy in tabac shops that cost 30 euro for phone and sim (no document) its a cheap little phone but does what it needs to do.
3 :
It will work as long as you put some money into it before 12 months from the last time you put some money in it. If you don't it will be automatically blocked and your credit will expire. You'll be able to transfer the expired credit to another SIM only if it's also a Vodafone. If you use it in France, make sure you have a decent tariff for use abroad, or you'll spend an outrageous amount of money. Be aware that if you use it outside of Italy, you'll be charged also for receiving calls.

Will an American iPhone 3g or 3gs work in Italy

Will an American iPhone 3g or 3gs work in Italy?
I heard you have to have a contract with like At&T and stuff but that you can also undo it when you get to the other country and unlock the phone ready for another SIM card or contract? Is it true? Will I have any problems doing it?

You will have to get the phone OUT of contract.. Witch is Expensive.. And just as long as the network in Italy runs off of GSM, UMTS, or HSDPA Then you will not have a problem using the iPhone there.. but it WILL have to be unlocked.

a working Visa, or just a passport... you could also apply for a government job and be stationed in Italy on a military base... you can apply to stay up to 5 years if possible but no less than 2. Or just get a student visa

You probably need to speak Italian.

You need to be more specific. If you are going to be using your existing SIM from your current carrier you will need to check the following : A) Contact your carrier to verify if they have a roaming agreement with any carriers in Italy. B) If they do, request to have International Roaming applied to your service so it will work while you are there.

Well, I have first hand personal experience in this. I moved to Italy from America not knowing a word of Italian (I married an Italian) and it was very difficult to find work - even if you speak fluent Italian - it's still difficult, the economy in the south especially is among the worst. I lived in Rome for 5 years and even there it wasnt easy. You can teach English though. I did that for a while and it seems that everyone from mother tongue English speaking countries does that at first. But you will only make about 4 or 5 euros an hour, better than nothing. What I strongly suggest you do is try one of the international companies (most are in Rome) where they speak English - such as WFP and FAO or IFAD - they pay great wages and speak English and it would be comparable to working in an American environment. Ive worked for one of them for a few years and it was great. Working for an Italian company would be less desirable since the pay is terrible (if they even decide to pay you) and they treat you as if they're doing you a favor just working for them for free. I worked for an Italian company teaching English for about 4 euros an hour and after about 6 weeks they still didn't pay me (this is very typical in Italy) and they made every excuse in the book as to why. "They couldn't find the key to the drawer for the checks" - "Wait until tomorrow" etc... Finally after I threatened them they payed me. I'm not trying to scare you but just to inform you to be prepared for what you may be up against. I know cleaning jobs are also popular - cleaning peoples homes. In North Italy it's easier to find work but still can be difficult. Hope it works out for ya!!!

Adults: Does anyone know how I can get work in Italy, specifically Milan

Adults: Does anyone know how I can get work in Italy, specifically Milan?
What opportunities are there for a US citizen to work in Italy? Is it easy or hard to get a Visa? What jobs are most likely to be found there and open to a "foreigner"? Thanks!

Without a passport from an EU country, or work skills that are not available to employers in Italy, it's just about impossible for a US citizen to find work there. You will need a job first to get a visa. But Italian employers need to prove that there is no Italian or EU citizen available to the work.
2 :
It is not necessarily easy to move here. You can only be here for a maximum of 90 days as a tourist without a visa. Also, you would need to speak the local language fairly well for most jobs. Here in Europe, citizens of the EU have the right to live and work within the EU. It would be illegal for others to do so without a proper visa. The site for visas here in Italy is: http://www.esteri.it/visti/index_eng.asp . The rules in much of the EU have been harmonized and will be similar. You can also check the website of the consulate that has jurisdiction over you for any country that you might be interested in. A work permit is separate - you cannot apply for that yourself. The company has to apply and they have to be able to demonstrate that there is not a viable EU candidate for the job. As a result, jobs for foreigners including US citizens are pretty much restricted to people with special education, knowledge, or experience. The medical/healthcare field may have the most demand. When I applied for a visa several years ago, the process took about 8 months even though it was just of transfer of the job I was already doing from the US to Italy. Your best bet might be to find a job with the office of a multinational company in the US and try to transfer from there. You're more likely to get relocation assistance that way too. You might want to consider a semester or year abroad studying here before committing to a move. That would at least give you an opportunity to get acclimated and make contacts. It's useful to check the expat sites for information about living and working here or other places you might be interested in: http://www.escapeartist.com/ http://www.expatica.com/ http://www.expatsinitaly.com/ There are similar sites specific to just about any country you might be interested in that you can find by searching for "ex pat" and the name of the country. Generally, these will have a lot of good information on daily life and negotiating the bureaucracy when you arrive and provide you with useful information you should know before you make the transition. You need to be aware that if you were to get a job here in Italy you would still need to file tax returns in the US as well as here. Right now, the economy isn't any better here than in the US and jobs are few and far between.

Can a certified lawyer who works in Italy come and work in the US

Can a certified lawyer who works in Italy come and work in the US?
My cousin is a lawyer in Italy and I was wondering what he would have to do in order to become a lawyer and practice law here in America. thank you
Immigration - 2 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Good question. Every state has different requirements for lawyers trained abroad. In your cousin's case, because he doesn't come from a common-law country, he'd have to demonstrate completion of a normal course of law education in his home country (with an official transcript). In most state's he'll also need to take at least one year of law classes in the United States (e.g., get an LLM or equivalent) and then pass the state's bar exam. Check with your state's bar association for specific requirements.
2 :
He would have to go back and learn American law and pass the state board like everyone else. This might take years.

Do you mean a voltage converter (not needed, all Europe works on 220/230 V) or a plug converter? Look here for a guide http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domestic_AC_power_plugs_and_sockets Which one do you have yet? If with "continental" you mean Type C, it will work for Italian plugs; if instead it's a Schuko (German) adapter, Schuko-to-Italian plug adapters are easy to find everywhere, in Italy.
2 :
Check buytravelconverter.com They advertise converters specific to Italy.
3 :
The electricity in Italy is 220 volts, 50 cycles, as in the rest of Europe, so no "power adapter" is needed. What is different is the shape of the plug for the socket. All major airports have shops with the proper plug sets for any country.

What is the best way to live and work in Italy without a business or language background?

This depends on where you're from. Right now, this would be difficult because there are not many jobs available. Most of the companies in the area where I live are not hiring anyone. If you don't have the language background, job opportunities will be even more limited. If you're a US citizen (or other non EU), you can only stay here in Europe for 90 days as a tourist without a visa (some non EU citizens require a visa to visit). It also isn't legal for you to work here without having a work permit and a visa that allows you to do so unless you're from the EU. Generally, you cannot apply for a work permit yourself - the company has to apply for it which means you need to have a job lined up. You can get work permit and visa information from the websites for the embassy/consulates of the countries you're interested in. For example: http://www.esteri.it/visti/home_eng.asp. http://www.netherlands-embassy.org/artic... http://ukinusa.fco.gov.uk/en Jobs for people outside the EU are difficult. EU citizens have the right to move and work within the EU, so there's a much smaller burden for a company to hire someone from here than from the US. As a US citizen, you need to have skills that aren't widely available here or some other specialized knowledge such as experience with non-European regulatory bodies. Some health care fields are in demand. One possibility though is working in a branch of an international company in your country and transfering here - that's how I ended up here in Italy for the past 9 years. However, that isn't too likely without specialized skills either. If you were Canadian or Austrailian, it might be possible to get a working holiday visa that would allow you to work short term here. That isn't available to US citizens, because the US doesn't have a similar program for foreigners. A good starting point for planning this type of move is to do some research on the expat websites for the countries you're interested in. This is a good way to get current information and make in-country contacts. These are sites for expats in Italy with general info on living and working and a couple with jobs listings: http://www.chiefdreamer.com/forum/ http://www.francethisway.com/wp/category... http://www.expatsinitaly.com/ http://www.expatica.com/ http://www.minbuza.nl/en/welcome/comingt... There are lots of other sites with information. Just Google "expat" and the name of the country you're interested in. Since you've got friends in France, you could get them to help make contacts with prospective employers. I would expect there would be a lot of competition. Note that if you are a US expat, you would have to file tax returns both here and in the US.

Face the real...you cant work in Italy without knowing the language...is the FIRST thing to know....sorry but would I have a chance to work in Us or Uk without speaking a word of english?Only in the restaurant kitchen maybe...but they are already filled with people from romania or north africa for that Twinpeaks you really think you can work in Italy and NO speak a word of italian? Have you had experience in that? Sorry but is far from the real..my boyfr could not speak a word of italian and NO ONE was ever consider him !! This is REAL life report....in Italy the need people who catch the meaning FAST as they dont want lose time and they got no patience...how can you expect they are there to repeat you very s l o w l y the words? They sack you straight away! To be an english teacher you have to be graduate here..is not enough is your mother toungue!
4 :
A lot of italians speak a bit of english, and some speak english very well. I think it shouldn't be a problem. Maybe you could teach english at school. I think you can find a job like this, if you teach with an italian teacher near you that explain better to the students. Anyway it depends if you want to go to north or south. Maybe in north there are more possibilities, and different jobs you can do.

Will a hair straightener purchased in England work in Italy without a converter?
Are the outlets the same in both countries?
Other - Europe - 1 Answers

You will not need a converter, which changes 120 to 240 volt, but you will need a plug adapter. The shape of the plug and outlet is different. On this page you will see the different pictures: http://www.powercords.co.uk/standard.htm If it has a grounded plug, with three metal prongs, you will need an adapter plug which has the three metal pins. If it has two metal pins and one plastic, you can get away with a much cheaper and more uniform Europlug adapter.
